This Gold Minoan HoneyBee Brooch is a stunning reproduction of the original ancient Greek Minoan bees pendant, crafted in 14k gold. Discovered in 1930 at Chrysolakkos, Malia, Crete, it dates back to the Middle Bronze Age (1800 – 1600BC). The intricate design depicts two bees transporting a drop of honey to their honeycomb, showcasing remarkable detail.
In Greek, the honeybee is known as “melissa”, adding depth to its symbolism. Widely regarded as the most renowned piece of Minoan jewelry. The original pendant is proudly showcased at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in Crete, Greece.
This piece serves as a testament to the artist’s skill, showcasing mastery in the granulation technique, which involves soldering tiny metal pieces onto the surface of the cast jewel, as well as the filigree technique.
Bees hold significant symbolic importance across various cultures, particularly in the Minoan civilization, which was matriarchal in nature. Believed to be associated with the Great Mother or Mother Goddess, bees symbolize mutual support and fertility, with honey being utilized in rituals.
