Caracteristic monument is the Lion of Chaeronea, funerary statue erected to mark the common tomb of more than 250 members of the Sacred Band of Thebes who had been killed in the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE. In which Philip II of Macedonia defeated a coalition of Greek city-states led by Thebes and Athens.
